Twitter Down Under

Update: To clarify, we're getting a new access number for Australia—as soon as we get the number, sms service will be back in action. We're working on it right now and it's a high priority.

Australian users please take note! If you currently use Twitter via your mobile device instead of over IM or the Web we have some news. Right now, Twittering via sms in Australia is more expensive than it needs to be—for you and for us. Our short term solution is to suspend sms support for Australian users.

When sms support for Australia returns it will be better all around. We'll let you know as soon as it does. In the meantime, we recommend using Twitter over IM, Web, Twitterrific, or any of these interesting alternatives.

Folks,
you're killing me. Seriously.

Here's hoping it's only short term!

And I wish you'd blogged this earlier, I sent numerous text messages yesterday trying to re-confirm my phone number with Twitter after removing it to show screenshots of how to set up your phone... Maybe you should set up a notification on your Devices screen?

Can you still allow incoming - even if you temporarily stop sending outgoing?

Hi Lachlan, I just updated the post a bit. The old access number was not good for users or us (if it was only costing us more than necessary we would have left it in place.) We're getting a new number which will make everything awesome. As soon as the new number is in place, everything will be back to normal and this is a a high priority for us.

This was bound to happen. No top of the cost, the telco providers in Australia (on the west coast at least) have been blocking both numbers at various times for various segments of the phone services. Can't prove it categorically, but there are too many people here with the same problems. One provider blocks the others on another provider can access.. etc.

Anyway a number of people have moved off SMS onto 3G mobile phone apps instead like twitteresce.

Which maybe be cheaper in costs for us users too.

I'm wondering where you got that map from! Looks like Spain and Portugal have broken free from Europe and drifted down under...and all the states have been renamed...and their borders moved...

can you give us any insight as to the exact (proportionate) difference between cost of supplying Australian SMS vs. the rest of the world?

Thanks, Biz!

Glad to have that clarified, at least. Hope you can get that number sorted soon.

Was there any particular reason for changing us over from the UK number to the US number? And is there any UK number?

I can only assume there are lots of Australian twitter users now, which is good!

But really guys please have us back online soon.

I sent a bunch of messages this week trying to reconfirm my phone too, it's hard to promote a service to friends when allofasudden it doesn't work :(

Super news about the new number.. but wish you'd been able to tell us earlier what was going on.

Wow this is great.

Although my SMS's to you guys was only 25c or whatever the standard cost of SMS's are as it was all included as part of my phone plan, so it didn't cost me any more, however I found that when I did use it, it was delayed showing up on my twitter page so hopefully this will fix that issue too!

Like everyone else, it would have been nice to have known sooner as I was on the road for a lot during the week (although no one reads my tweets anyway :> ).

I did notice on my last phone bill that 3 charges more for international SMS than domestic (about 10c more from memory). Since I have never even come close to my monthly cap that doesn't really bother me, but I did find that interesting.

Hope it's all sorted soon. Now that I can't do it, I find that I used to use SMS to update twitter a lot.

I felt a real disconnect this morning as I walked to work. I thought of something that I wanted to share, pulled out my phone and... Damn!

Just wanted to ask for some further clarification about your update, Biz. I assume you mean that folks whose phones are authenticated can still send? Is that correct? Whereas folks, like me, who are currently unauthenticated, are unable to re-confirm?

(sorry, but it is still unclear)

Ah, this is great news. I'd almost given up on the SMS update service, because I'm being charged EIGHTY cents per message. I've no clue what that's about.

Is there anyway to Twitter from MSN?

Thanks for the updates. I hope the Australian number is sorted out soon and we can all get back to receiving Tweets via SMS. It's so quiet without my phone beeping during the day.

EmailTwitter.com is a great way to avoid SMS bills, if your mobile device supports e-mail.

We've got several Australian users who take advantage of the service to avoid SMS fees. You can both retrieve tweets and send tweets from your mobile e-mail client.

Love twitter and have become depended on it. I agree the update would be great but gee wizz this down time is killing me. I just hope the wait will be worth it and no nasty surprises with inflated costs.

Can you please change the advisory text - it says you can still send but clearly, several dollars down, I know that you cannot.

I don't understand your claim that the service as it was is "not good for users", and the direct implication that it was costing users more than it should.

I pay nothing to get twitter updates via SMS. No-one in Australia pays to receive SMS.

I pay ~25 cents to send an SMS update. All providers that I'm aware of in Australia charge around this amount. I'd pay exactly the same if you had an Australian number that I was SMSing.

What am I missing? How is the service "not good" for me? How are you going to save anyone other than yourself money by finding some alternate arrangement?

James,

because the Twitter number (either US or UK) is international your provider will be charging you international rates. What those rates are depend on your provider and your package

I pay 29c per international SMS as opposed to 22c for domestic. I felt it was worth it - but as you can see above Ashley was being charged 80c per message

Obviously a domestic number to text to is better for everyone (including Twitter Inc). I might wish they had done things a little differently (or been able to), but at least they're headed in the right direction

Eeep.. I just checked my provider (vodafone), and the two major telcos (Telstra and Optus)... Optus charge 35c for international SMS, Telstra charge 50 - it seems Vodafone is the only one that still charges the same (25c) for international sms as for national.

When did our telcos all go mad? I'm glad I'm still with the only apparently sane one

My apologies for my earlier tirade; I hadn't realised how the situation had changed since last time I was comparing carriers.

As an aside, I'm getting (and able to send) SMS updates again as of this afternoon, on the old number.. does this mean that something has been fixed?

this is awesome, I thought you guys would be a long way away from considering our Country. I think the Australian market will be very good, weren't we one of the biggest consumers of mobile phones at one point?

Can I repeat my request that you remove the text saying we can still send SMS. We cannot. It does not go through. I have spent several dollars for nothing, so have others.

Please!

Thanks for the update, but it would have been really nice if the devices page mentioned this, so I wouldn't spend money trying to verify my phone!

Cheers and keep up the good work,
