Australian Clarity
Here's more information on our recent changes to our international access number for SMS user with special regard to folks in Australia. We use a UK number to support Australia, but our old number did not work for all Australians and some messages were routed in a roundabout way that was inefficient and in some cases more expensive.
So, we got a new UK number that works for everyone in Australia. In order to switch numbers, we had to do some development work. If for some reason you're an Australian Twitter-er and you're not happy or having difficulty with our SMS feature, please do let us know.

Pick me! pick me! Not used to so many characters, but...
I have not received a text message for over a week when I got lots of week old tweets.
I also am trying not to send tweets via SMS as last time I did they did not get through and it is expensive to SMS overseas when local SMSs are free for me under my plan.
But overall I love twitter!

I've my twitter set to notify my via phone, but I haven't yet received any notifications (though tweets have been happening.) I tried deleting and reverifying my phone number, and that worked (twitter SMS'd me back saying the verification was successful), but to no avail.
Twitter posting and the various commands seem to work, I just ... don't receive SMSes.
What's going on? It used to work! :(
Ok,
So the whole thing about the Australian Number was simply a smoke screen because your last number was more expensive for you?
It's just as expensive and unreliable now, as it was then.
It's still slow, it's still not what you said you were doing..
I'll stick to every *other* possible option, thanks for trying.
Hey BrendenB, the old number didn't work at all for many Australian users. It was broken and we could not keep using it. Furthermore, it occasionally created extra expense which was of little concern overall for us but could potentially be annoying to users. This new number works for everyone and that's the important bit.
Unrelated to the access number itself, we just fixed a bug that was preventing some users from receiving updates via sms.
So, now we should be all good. Please let us know if that is not the case. Thanks!
SMS notifications still aren't working. What gives? My provider is Vodafone.
still not working here either, vodafone aus.
Hey guys
I'm in the UK and changed my number like a good little twitterite.
But now I get an automatic reminder after every tweet I send telling me about the new access number which I'm already using. Deleted the number off my handset and started again but still getting reminders about something I already know.
Tad annoying.
Other than that, Twitter is the best thing to happen to the internet in years.
When there will be a french number?
hi everyone
what is going on in here.?

I also switched over to the new number, sending updates is fine, but receiving updates from the people I follow and direct messages isn't working.
I hadn't been keeping up with the SMS news... and was just enjoying mobile web updates. But randomly this morning (Sunday, at about 7am), an update arrived on my phone!
I was very excited :)
Thanks for the fix!
Don't mean to prick your bubble, biz, but either I'm a noone or the new number doesn't quite work for everyone. Like nornagon, I've tried starting afresh, but my little birdie ain't tweeting like it used to, mate.

Well waddya know - my little birdie's tweeting again. Thanks heaps.

No.
You said that "The old access number was not good for users or us (if it was only costing us more than necessary we would have left it in place.)".
The new number is just as bad for users; it's still international, and anyone who was paying for expensive international SMS is still paying for expensive international SMS. From the user's point of view, you have fixed absolutely nothing, and now you're continuing to lie to us about the change.
Well done.
Hi zhasper,
We use a UK number to serve many countries outside North America, Australia included. The old UK number did not work *at all* for some Australian users. In some cases it even routed the SMS through the US costing Australian users even more. The old number was not good, we simply had to replace it.
It sounds like you are disappointed that there is not a local Australian access number. If that is indeed the case, then consider your wish added to our wish list. Thanks for your feedback!
Hello,
I receive Twitters as usual. However if I try to post messages to the new number they do not at all show up.
Neither at my friends or on my webpage.
Howcome?
Anyone?

I don't understand what you mean by referring to an old UK number; the only number I was aware of was the US number, and it was working fine for me. Can you elaborate more about that?
As for an australian access number: god yes! You said that the old solution was too expensive, and that you'd fix it. In an Australian context, "too expensive" can only mean "international", and "fix it" means "not international". Your new number is still international, therefore still just as expensive. As far as most Australian users are concerned, you've blocked access to a number that worked fine for some of us, then replaced it with a new number that is still too expensive for those people for whom the old number was too expensive. You haven't added new functionality (that I know of), you haven't reduced the cost for anyone. We've gained nothing, except the annoyance of not being able to send/receive twitter SMS for a few weeks.
As I think I've noted before, I'm not affected at all - my provider is the only one of the 4 major carriers that doesn't charge extra for international SMS. I don't care whether the access point is local or not, but a lot of other people do.
I agree with zhasper - the only real solution for Australian users would be a local, normal sms (i.e. no 55cents per text) rate number.
International numbers are not a solution for Australian users.
I am not using Twitter to its full capability for THIS VERY REASON!
I also switched over to the new number, sending updates is fine, but receiving updates from the people I follow and direct messages isn't working.
Wednesday 23rd May
I haven't had an SMS update for about 13hrs now
Okay, the SMS's work for me. But how much am I looking to be paying for incoming SMS's?
Why is there no mention of this during the sign up stage to say that if I'm in Australia that I'll get charge X amount. Or looking to be charged between X and Y amount?
Annoyingly, although this number looks like it's in the UK, it's not - it's in the Isle of Man, meaning that UK users like me get charged international SMS rates when they're not expecting it, and it's excluded from most inclusive text packages.
The IoM, although it's in the UK numbering plan, isn't actually part of the UK. It's a bit like Guam is in the NANP but not part of the US.

There seems to be a lot of SMS issues with Australia at the moment - sending updates is no problem, but Twitter just stops sending SMS messages to phones for some reason.
It doesn't have anything to do with the 250 message limit, and removing and re-adding the device seemingly fixes the problem.... for a day or two.
Any update from Twitter on this problem? And is there any update on an Australian Twitter number?
