Twitter's Drinking Water Strategy

It occurs to us that paying to have water bottled and shipped to our office when clean drinking water flows from the tap is silly, to say the least. In fact, some might even say it's socially, ecologically, and financially irresponsible.
  • Many people suffer without access to reliable drinking water
  • The bottled water industry creates lots of garbage and pollution
  • Bottled water costs way more than tap water
However, it's important that folks drink water every day so we've devised an official Twitter, Inc water strategy. First, we stopped delivery of bottled water. Next, we're going to buy a nifty water bottle for everyone who works at Twitter and install a filter on the tap so the water is even tastier.

When guests visit our office, we'll offer them drinking water from our limited stock of Ethos water. Ethos works to help children around the world get clean water and raise awareness of the world water crisis.

how do I change the Badge to be on the right side of my blog. I like it like Sara B's twitter at http://www.sarabmusic.com/ do you know how? I know it is in a table but I don't quite know enough html to adjust it. If you want to go to my site to see what I messed up maybe there is a fix it so it can be like Sara's?

Didn't SF ban bottled water sales in the City?

I drink straight from the tap, but we also have a filtered water dispenser where I work.

The world water crisis is one of the largest public health issues of our time. If all the earth's water fit in a gallon jug, available fresh water would equal just over a tablespoon!

Water is life in places like Bagan, Burma where the summer temperatures can reach 120F and the Irrawaddy River shrinks leaving local women to walk as much as 5 miles from where we helped sponsor a fresh water well for the community.

I applaud your efforts to raise water conservation awareness and encourage you to consider philanthropic travel when its time to take a break!

That's great news.

I've been reconsidering my water consumption since seeing this picture.

Good plan! However, I suspect your employees would be happier with a bottle that doesn't require screwing off the top each time, and that's even cooler. Check out the Camelbak bottles.

I think that's a great idea, totally cool. Now you are going to have to make sure your employees keep an eye on them! I've lost so many of my bottles, it's not even funny. I do have to be more carefull.

Wishing you well with your new venture! love it!

@Fritz it wasn't banned in the City outright, just banned to buy it for city government offices. Cheers to Twitter for following suit.

For me, the only way to have the best tasting water is by using a water bottle like the one you are giving your employees, instead of some plastic throwaway freebee. You will notice the difference much more than the difference between tap filtered water and bottled filtered water,

Reused bottles tend to harbor germs, why not use mugs or cups?

I'm sorry, but u guys need to put some updates out and not just textual crap about water...instead I mean features. fur-realz.

two suggestions... market Twitter Nalgene bottles to further the more water, less waste concept. As for the ethos note, why can't a mega-corp like Starbucks give more than a nickel per bottle if it really cared. They probably use filtered tap water. If folks saw that they gave more, they'd probably buy more, thus minimizing losses. I "heart" TWITTER!!!

We are having floods in Wales right now and the rain is still belting down, yet people are still buying bottled water.

What's wrong with standing outside, looking up, with your mouth open?

People are too sanitized these days, which is why they always get ill when they meet nature!

I'm so happy that Twitter is being so eco-conscious.

It's interesting to find out that bottled water poses a significant threat to the environment due to shipping. First, the plastic bottles (which are usually made in China) must be shipped to the bottling plant, then after the water is put into the bottles they must be shipped ALL OVER THE COUNTRY by big trailer trucks...this isn't even considering the amount of fossil fuels the machines that do the bottling consume! Furthermore, you have to drive out to buy the bottled water and transport it back to your home (though, admittedly this is usually done whilst grocery shopping). You're better off buying a Brita filter and drinking the tap. Go twitter!

True, in addition, your body needs some of the irons and metals in tap-research it and the data will support it- one of the reasons it's so popular, imo, is that people do not typically go around with a kitchen glass with tap water while driving, working out etc- so to purchase it already contained and easily disposable is very convenient..just one take.

We have a bottleless water cooler that filters tap water and then has a hot and cold tap so you can get the best of both worlds. No bottles, cheap filtered water, hot or chilled, and no individual bottles to lose or change filters on. We simply rented it from Culligan.

Bravo on passing on the bottled water boondoggle. If we quit buying these designer H20 hornswaggles maybe the cities would be pressured into cleaning up the tap water into a potable liquid we deserve!
In the meantime - try a reverse osmosis filter instead of the simple charcoal filters that fit on the faucets.

Great concept. The idea of having to pay for water when it's obviously free at my faucet never did feel right! My parents use one of them point of use water coolers which my dad plugged into the water line (like a fridge ice maker). Props.
