Help Us Test Our India Shortcode

We know there's lots of folks in India who like Twitter. We've already noticed some cricket action and at least one Bollywood movie. We'd like to see more people in India take advantage of Twitter. So, if you have friends or family that live in India (or if you live in India yourself), you can help us spread the word about our India shortcode: 5566511. Using this shortcode means not having to pay international SMS charges when using Twitter from India.

Some Things To Note

SMS messages are limited to 250 per week for folks outside the US. If you come close to the upper limit in a week, we'll let you know in advance. We're also aware of a few wrinkles that have yet to be smoothed out surrounding verification on certain operators. Please let us know how the India shortcode works for you.

I think this number has already been there for a while now ,it works great but i think these are some kind of special numbers ,the service providers charge us more than then normal sms charges.but anyways lesser than the international sms rates .

There's also an international cricket feed at testcricket covering all international matches. Not ball by ball, but every wicket, and 4 score updates an hour per match :)

Thanks for the code, even though I've been using it for quite a few months now. It did not work on my previous connection, but works great on my connection right now.

I've been leaving my replies at the getsatisfaction.com page for this same topic too :)

To Twitter India users - how cost to use the service? Is it a subscription or are you charged per message?

Blogger Mohamme anuz said...

as per the cost I am in Airtel, sending msg to twitter cost Rs.3 and the international sms costs Rs.5 .

I generally use gprs to send msg which costs much lesser than sending a sms.

It didn't work for me..Got a response saying "This information is not available at the moment. Please try after some time". Can you please take care Twitter?

Regarding the cost of the service, international text messages cost me Rs.3. Text to this short code also cost the same for me as this is classified as a Value Added Service by my operator. SO whats the difference for me? Moreover short code is not working too.. If you can make the cost the same as the cost for a local message(which is free for my plan) then i would be delighted!!! :)

One thing useful is there is no need to remember that lengthy U.K number

You should consider getting few local numbers in india..
Atleast you can check your graphs/logs and decide which cities in india get the most tweets..

You could then get different numbers for different states, Indian states are huge as big and few of the countries..

I guess you should initiate this quickly as the short codes are costly.. as much as 10-100times than normal SMS charges in india..

I guess 5-6 numbers to india would be sufficient.. or best is get a toll free sms number..

1. Works with Airtel Andhra Pradesh circle.
2. Charges are INR 3 per sms (+ 12.5% tax etc)
3. I was able to post to twitter using this number.
4. However, I don't get any incoming msgs/sms from twitter when somebody else/me post msgs. Yes, I have already enabled this.
