Twittday

I recently visited the beautiful cities of Barcelona and Madrid while attending the Mobile World Congress (née 3GSM). My favorite part of the trip was when I was able to sit down to dinner with the 2 founders of Twittmad and 2 members of the newspaper adn. Twittmad is a Twitter user group in Madrid which meets monthly and draws over 100 passionate Twitter users! It became so successful that the founders started similar meet-ups in Barcelona, Seville, and now Tokyo, all under the Twittday umbrella.

The group took to me to eat at the oldest restaurant in the world, where we discussed all things Twitter over traditional Spanish fare and vino. Here's a picture of my hosts @marilink, @juangigli, @davidalvarez, and @seretuaccidente.

Do you have a local Twitter meet-up for your city? What can Twitter do to better support your gatherings?

About a hundred Mexican twitters met at a bar in Mexico City three weeks ago, and there are plans to do it monthly; you can visit the official blog at www.twittmx.com

there is a fairly large Melbourne twitter following (http://melbourne.twitterusergroup.com/) but it is always hard to catch new members.

A great way to search for twitters by region and befriend them would be a great help!

I just searched meetup.com for the word "twitter" in the United States and couldn't find anything. What are the pros and cons of organizing Twitter meetups via meetup.com?

It was a pleasure Jack and just a way to thank you for having set up such an amazing service.

Twitter meetups are so fun, I hope next time you can come to one of them. You have cities to choose, isn't it?

By the way, the other journalist twitter nick is @seretuaccidente

We have @MumbaiTwit, a random once-a-month-or-two meet up of Twitterers in Mumbai, usually hosted by @Gauravonomics and actively promoted by me (@aalaap.

I don't suppose there's anything Twitter can/should/needs do to facilitate meet-ups, other than occasionally post on the blog about certain popular meets taking place.

It's fine the way it is! :)

A bunch of bloggers in the Charleston, SC area get together on a fairly regular basis about once or twice a month. Recently we started inviting local twitters in the area to join us. The last couple of gatherings have seen a pretty good turnout of bloggers and twitters in the area. At the last meeting someone even brought up the idea of a blogger vs. twitter paintball match!
