A little spring cleaning

Last night, we rolled out a few minor tweaks to the web UI which should hopefully make your experience with that part of Twitter a little better. Here's a list of the things that we changed, and why we changed them.

1. Search is now at the top of the page

People would often miss the search box when it was tucked away at the bottom of the sidebar before, so we've moved it up to the top of the page to make it easier to find. And consequently, easier for you to find people you might want to follow.

2. 'Find & Follow' has been changed

We've changed the layout of the Find & Follow page a little to separate out the two different tasks you can perform here (basically: getting us to invite people vs. sending invites via us). This change will also allow us to easily add even more ways for you to discover other people you know who might be using Twitter, which we hope to do soon.

We've also revised the wording we use to make it more obvious what will happen at each stage of the process, so you know better what will be sent to who.

3. New profile page display

There's also a new version of the page that people will see when they view your profile page when they're not signed in. Since this page is often indexed by Google, we wanted to make sure that new users could quickly see what Twitter was and what it could do, and provide a nice big button for them to join with.

4. Other "fit and finish" details

Finally, there are a few things that we've tidied up around the site - we've added tabs to the settings page to be more consistent, we've moved the sleep setting for your phone over to the devices page rather than having it on a separate page, we've added an email invites box to the bottom of the search results in case you don't find who you're looking for, we've made the link to the page where we offer badges more prominent (look out for new ones soon!), and we've added a link to a survey so that we can find out a little bit more about you (this will only be temporary, so if you want to participate, make sure you do now).

This is the first step in our current effort to clean up a few areas of the site that we know need some work. We have a few more fixes to make in the near future (also for SMS and m.twitter.com) before we get on to the exciting new features we have planned for the rest of the year!

We hope the changes make a difference to you and, as ever, we'd love to hear your feedback.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the new star icon from a while back, and the new (HUGE) red lock icon design? The old buttons were so much better... :(

Other than that ... nice release, guys.

Couple thoughts:

The use of the scriptaculous hover highlights is kind of bunk: http://twitter.com/badges
Hover back and forth a few times and you'll see what I mean (the yellow glow sticks and doesnt fade out) As far as I know, this is a problem with the default implementation of the effect in rails...

Second: the white box links for SHARE YOUR STORY and PUT TWITTER ON YOUR SITE create a kind of visual disruption. I find them distracting. To me, they look slapped on and not integrated well into the overall design of the page.

Otherwise, I've nothing to say other than to tell you all that I heap praise upon Twitter everywhere I go. Its a great system and I enjoy using it.

Great work guys!

I assume it's the update that's causing the problem, because I've never had this problem before. But I'll type my tweet and hit update, and the message will disappear, but not update my twitter account. So I'll type out the message again, but the same thing will happen again. Eventually, after 4 or 5 tries, it'll finally update, but by then I don't even care if anyone knows what I had to type.

Here are some suggested high priority wishes:

- An auto-reciprocate feature to follow back those who follow you

- A way to easily see who has followed you recently and the ability to check/select multiple users to follow back

- A way to see your highest priority friends' updates first or highlighted. This implies that there is a way to pick your most inner circle of friends to see only their updates. Maybe in a new tab?

I've just sent some invites to people, but I noticed that each time I click in the text box, the existing contents disappears. This means I have to repeatedly enter potentially long email addresses before the task is complete. This needs to be fixed straight away.

Concerning #3, I would prefer the information for new Twitter users not to take up valuable top fold space.

i find it sad that i can't search for people by their 1 line profile... i found many like minded people that way a few days ago..now it's no longer possible..

Looks great - all minor tweaks but for the better for sure.

The tiniest little feature I'd lovvveee to see is the ability to checkoff DMs so I can delete multiples at one time. It's ridiculous to have to delete each individually.

Thanks guys!

I think it overall looks much cleaner and sharper even with these small changes. The site in general is just that little bit easier to navigate.

The 3rd feature is kind of sucky. Its ugly. When people come to someones profile, and if they want to learn about twitter, they will anyways understand it. You have need to put this big ugly badge. Twitter is cool for its simplicity and this big advertisement thing, isn't cool. And doesnt go with the cool image of twitter.
