Replies Are Back, Improvements Continue

We deployed a change on Saturday which brought the Replies feature back for Web and RSS. We use Replies as much as anyone else so we were not happy when we discovered that it was threatening the overall service and required disabling for maintenance. In addition to bringing back Replies, this deploy also cleaned up some code and fixed some bugs.

For folks who love Twitter and read popular technology blogs like TechCrunch, Friday's comparison to a multi-car pile-up seemed fair. With the Replies tab disabled since Tuesday and a frustrating outage on Thursday morning, it felt like a roadblock for us too.

Last week's emergency repair technique is a symptom not just of increasing activity and growth but of a process, approach, and architecture with room for improvement. Every time we update a component, we take another step toward better performance. There's lots of work ahead but we are moving forward on improvements that address not just service performance but also our implementation process.

We're settling in to our new office space this week—it has a panoramic view of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. For those who don't live in the Bay Area, the Bay Bridge is currently being rebuilt to handle more traffic and to withstand major events like earthquakes. We now have a huge visual reminder outside our office window every day.

Hey Biz!

Thanks for posting about this! Are you going to add the "reply feature" to the mobile version of twitter?

I only ask because the web version has one, but inserting it within mobile would be killer, especially for iPhone users (hint, hint).

Hi Darnell,

I totally agree on your request, as a Windows Mobile user I miss replies greatly while on the road, having to go check replies on an RSS reader (Google Reader, mobile version).

Do you use an iPhone regularly for Twitter? I don't have one but my GF does, and the non-mobile or "classic" view works nicely on it, if only somewhat slow because of the avatars. If avatar images could be turned of it would be so sweet.

I wouldn't say the bridge is being rebuilt. Another bridge is being built, next to the current East span while the current (not earthquake proof) span is still used.

With all these issues, I'm assuming the analogy still works - the current system will be used, until an entirely re-worked system can be put in place.

Are there any plans for allowing us to flag Twitter spam accounts?

@ Ignace / Micronauta: I use to use twitter frequently on the iPhone...until I started encountered the frequent errors of late (since then I've moved on towards FriendFeed).

The classic version is great, although it would be even better if the iPhone had copy & paste enabled (for links).

@ Schleuss: Jealous? :-P

You seem to be down again. I don't realize how much I depend on Twitter until the system gets overloaded and stops working. It's become a part of my life!

But I think any diatribes against Twitter are misplaced. You are providing a free service and I think the majority of your users appreciate what you do...we've just grown terribly dependent upon the system working correctly!

My primary request is to have pagination stabilized. Since I'm not online all day, I miss tweets from friends that have been pushed back from page 1.
Thanks,
ChuckL50
