Big Change in Protected-User Model

This week we rolled out a change that most people won't notice but for those who do it's a pretty big deal. The change effects those who choose to protect their updates—i.e., only allow those whom they approve follow them.

Previously, if you were protected you had to follow anyone whom you allowed to follow you. Similarly, if you followed someone, you were granting them permission to follow you. This didn't really make sense in a lot of cases. For instance, you may want to get news updates from @cnn but only wish to allow people you know to get your updates.

So, following is now de-coupled from approving followers. Here's the help doc for more details.

Thanks to @bs and others for getting this out.

I would like you to also de-couple approving followers from protecting updates. ie allow me the option to have to approve new followers, without forcing me to protect my updates. I am happy for my updates to be public, but want control over my followers.

@gavin knight

That doesn't make any sense. If you want your feed to be public, make it public. Having someone get updates from your feed shouldn't matter to you if you want your feed to be public.

Can't have your cake and eat it too.

I agree with Gavin - let me stay on public timeline but let me approve followers.

Agreed with Gavin Knight - let me approve followers and the "spam" problem will go away.

Also, I agree with "unhuman"

they're just following me with my having any say in the matter and I can't even see their stream! Unfair.

Before people start blocking any protected user who follows, out of spite, let's consider making a followback easier.

Finally, could you announce this stuff BEFORE it hapens? Some of us did notice and thought we'd hit a bug.

Here's something else I wish you'd add - I've asked for it via Support!

When I request to follow someone, let me include a (140 character :) explanation. Did I come from their blog? Were they recommended by a friend? (It's amazing how many people say "follow my @friend! She's cool!" and @friend is protected :(

And speaking of which, I don't want to EVER see @replies to @protected people in my timeline Unless I'm following them. That's rude to me and inappropriate to @protected.

@ Kyle LeBoeuf

disagree

having my tweets in the public feed and one my own twitter page is one thing

having people 'follow' me is a whole new level of intimacy ... which I would like to have much more control over

also, I list my tweets on my blog, on friendfeed, etc ... which I don't think is possible if I protect my twitter account
