Where Are My Followers?
Update: This has been fixed but the actual numbers and profile pictures might not look right until tomorrow afternoon due to caching.
Recently, some people began noticing a decline in their following and follower numbers. We investigated and determined this was caused by an error during a database upgrade. We'll be restoring followers throughout the day to those who were affected and keeping the status blog and Get Satisfaction forum updated with specifics.
Please note that this is unrelated to our ongoing spam initiative as some folks were wondering. Twitter fights spam by putting rules in place to inhibit certain activities. We don't automatically delete accounts en masse.

I've managed to lose *all* my following and followers, with the sole exception of one new one added today.
Definitely would like to have my followers & followees restored so I can keep up w/ my friends & vice-versa. And, thanks for the head's up too. Cheers!
You need a bigger fatter safer box your database.

For spam, why can't, when we select to "block" a user, we elect that it's because we suspect they're spam? The wisdom of crowds/flagging systems would take over and let you see who needs to be ban-hammered, fast.
As Chris said above, the best way to determine spam is always via human judgement rather than filters and algorhythms which always have some element of inbuilt error.
I've never seen a filter which works effectively, and yet doesn't accidentally catch legitimate users.
But on the bright side it looks like my following and followers are back - although there's no way to check, except to look at the totals!
is the capcha codes now working? As there are loads of reports no new accounts can be made as the capcha ( humaness ) is now roking at all
my followers are all back, but now i can´t open my home account since more den ten hours
Twitter, thanks for keeping us in the loop throughout this little DB crash. Somehow, I was never worried that my followers might never return, and in the end my trust was justified. Thanks for not making me look a fool ;)
By the way, I'm not sure if the team will see this here, but perhaps they will: This morning I posted an article entitled The Top 10 Features Twitter Should Have, But Doesn't and it has sparked quite a bit of discussion on the blog, on Twitter and on other social media like Friendfeed.
I would love to know what Twitter thinks of the suggestions, and whether any of the 10 are on your roadmap!

Thanks for bringing back the people I'm following! Is anything happening about restoring "lost" older postings? I lost mine the same time I lost the people I'm following. I'm a new user so not that many older postings. Many thanks!

The Cosmic Laugh Track was in fine form this week. First Twitter makes a bad decision -- the algorithmic "you can't follow any more people" limits that harm real, popular users far more than potential "spammers" (spitters).
Then the Universe, in its Infinite Sense of Humor, responds with the best circumstantial evidence a conspiracy theorist could ask for - not only does Twitter impose limits, it appears to be deleting followers/followees.
If it wasn't disturbing, it would be funnier.

Dear Twitter,
While my followers seemed to slowly but surely come back, I'm still unable to FOLLOW any of my new clients who are following me.
Please fix my ability to follow my clients.
I've been a big promoter of Twitter, getting in Entrepreneur Magazine, news, radio etc to talk about the power of Twitter for people from all walks of life.
But if I'm restricted from following my clients & subscribers back so they can DM me about my products or services, this impedes my ability to use TWitter as an effective communication tool.
Ask any of my followers - I am not a spammer nor a robot. I give them tremendous value - and have added each and every person I'm following MANUALLY.
I am against robots, and if you want to prevent robots from auto-adding - I'd support you using preventative measures like "captcha" as Myspace started using. As much of a pain it is, it's better than arbitrarily cutting off legitimate, upstanding business owners from the amount of people we can listen to (aka: follow).
