Mobilizing His Followers
This AP story points out that Mr. Obama is harnessing the real-time power of Twitter to mobilize his followers to vote. I can just picture the tweet come November: "Hoping you'll go make me president—right now!"
Obama's campaign has used the Internet to boost fundraising, building upon Howard Dean's Web strategy in 2004, but the campaign's use of text messaging has the potential to mobilize voters in a new way.The article also mentions that "Republican John McCain's campaign, meanwhile, has not highlighted text messages," Instead McCain is going old-school with viral YouTube videos, "McCain's recent 'Celeb' ad, which compared Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, has received about 2 million hits on YouTube."
Obama's campaign has encouraged supporters to sign up for e-mails and text messages and sent text messages to voters on the days of key primary contests. The messages also helped encourage supporters to attend local events and tune into Obama television appearances.
On the Web, Obama's Twitter site now has more than 60,000 followers, who receive updates from Obama's town hall meetings and links to his Web site.
Nick Shapiro, an Obama spokesman, declined to release the number of cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses the campaign has amassed. He said the text messaging has been "valuable because not everyone sits in front of a computer or a television."

I generally have not been one to watch speeches, but between Barack Obama's skills as an orator and easy links to his speeches when they are happening, I find myself listening to almost all of them. I even feel a little disappointed when I miss one.
Only since about a week ago Obama became more popular on Twitter than Kevon Rose. Right now he is THE most popular Twitter user! How long will it take before he has 100.000 followers? http://twittercounter.com/?inc=100
Sorry if I a bothering and asking this on the wrong place maybe, but I need to know if there is a way to see when has the user joined twitter.
Thanks!
I hope Twitter has the capacity to handle it all come Election Day and that a disaster isn't in the works. And I hope you'll be on the lookout for dirty tricksters, spammers, denial-of-service attacks, etc. etc. It makes me nervous to think that technology may alter the course of an election.
That's why I'm launching a bold new initiative, today, to call upon Twitter powers that be to enable "track" during the Democratic convention. There are those that think this could make a real difference.
Would that be feasible?
Exactly 40 years later,
"The whole world's watching, the whole world's watching..."

It is remarkable and very close to scary how one person can mesmerize and captivate 10's of thousands of people. BHO's ability to use technology to "raise the dead" is astonding. I fear, however, we could get another "Tricky Dicky" or "Slick Willy". I hope a "Bad Barack" or "OMG Obama" will not be taxing on the American people's patience or their pocketbooks.
"the shiny bait of being among the first to know lured them into handing over something of real value: their cell phone numbers." What is the privacy policy here? If I stop following him, or if I disable phone updates for him, then he will no longer have my cell phone number, right? or does he?

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood........
I'm one of Obama's 'followers.' I've taught for the L.A. Unified School District for 35 years, and naturally, I read Obama's books immediately. I was supporting Kucinich until he had to drop out. I supported Kucinich in the last election, and he received only 5% of the vote. I wanted Kucinich to leave the Democratic Party and go Green, but apparently there is no such possibility. I believe with my help, and that of millions of others like me, Obama/Biden will be our next presidential team.
I can only think of "Used Car Salesman" when I hear him speak. He sounds just like a 2 bit politician, flip flopping and saying what ever needs to be said where it needs to be said. Can't anyone see through this guy. Please have the Dems put somebody else up for the party or I'll have to bite the bullet and vote for McCain.
Hi, Anonymous: I think you should bite the bullet and vote for McCain. He's going to need your vote.
