Looking back at the 2014 #Oscars on Twitter

Monday, 3 March 2014

Tonight, Hollywood royalty gathered to celebrate the 86th Academy Awards. Throughout the evening, acceptance speeches, tributes and spontaneous selfies made us laugh, cry, smile, and of course, turn to our Twitter stream for the #Oscars party.

During the live show (8:30 p.m.-12:00 midnight ET) there were more than 14.7 million Tweets around the world containing terms related to the telecast. Including the red carpet and conversation immediately following the show (5:30 p.m.-12:10 a.m. ET), there were 17.1 million Oscar-related Tweets. The live reach of the conversation in the U.S. will be measured and shared by Nielsen tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. The research firm will provide impression numbers, number of unique authors, and more data.

The power of Twitter as the perfect companion to TV shone through, as Ellen (@TheEllenShow) organized a real-time star-studded selfie during the program, with the stated goal of making it the most retweeted Tweet, ever.
Her plan worked:

After the show, @TheEllenShow’s follower growth was 47 times more than her average daily growth rate this year.

Not surprisingly, selfies emerged as a theme for the evening. Take a look at this montage to get a sense of the most shared selfies and photos of the night:

In addition to the “best photo ever”, here are the other moments that drove the most Twitter conversation, measured in Tweets per minute:

  1. @TheEllenShow gathers nominees & stars for Twitter photo
    (10:07 p.m. ET): 254,644 TPM
  2. @TheEllenShow delivers pizza to the audience
    (10:24 p.m. ET): 158,159 TPM
  3. Gravity wins its 6th Oscar — for film editing
    (10:31 p.m. ET): 135,330 TPM

The most tweeted-about nominees of the evening were:

  1. Lupita Nyong’o*
  2. Jennifer Lawrence
  3. Brad Pitt
  4. Alfonso Cuarón
  5. Cate Blanchett

People were chattering throughout the evening about all the films. These got the most mentions:

  1. Gravity
  2. Frozen
  3. 12 Years a Slave
  4. Dallas Buyers Club
  5. The Wolf of Wall Street

Of course, the film awards are just part of the draw. For many, the fashion is just as closely watched. E! (@redcarpet) captured some of the best fashion moments on the red carpet with its “Fashion Turn” Vine Booth 360.

Fans at home even had a chance to be a part of the red carpet by tweeting their #MyOscarPhoto, and some of those were chosen to appear alongside celebrities during the famed walk. And whether they were at home or on the scene at the red carpet, backstage at the #ArchDigestGreenRoom, or onstage, all of the nominees, winners, and other celebrants offered us a front row seat to Hollywood’s biggest night. Here are some of their Tweets:
