The Billboard Trending 140: Aug. 18-25

The MTV Video Music Awards aired on Sunday and fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the performances. The Trending 140 showed the results in real time as performers on stage notched top chart positions, including @NickiMinaj, @JessieJ, @ArianaGrande, Sam Smith (@samsmithworld) @5SOS and Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13).

@MsLaurynHill released “Black Rage,” a song she performed live for years but never released publicly, and dedicated it to #Ferguson.

@Eminem’s new single “Guts Over Fear” featuring @Sia debuted Monday, and in a single day managed to climb to #2 on the weekly Popular Chart. The song was partnered with the announcement of “SHADYXV,” @Eminem’s 2-LP set celebrating 15 years of his label @ShadyRecords, due on Nov. 28. @Eminem took to Twitter to confirm the release.

Atlanta rapper @Future had the #1 debut of the week with “Monster,” his new single produced by @MetroBoomin and Southside.

Emerging artists shine
Congrats to the electronic duo @ODESZA who sold out shows coast-to-coast and had a top ten debut this week with “Say My Name.”

Record label October’s Very Own continues to dominate the Trending 140 with new releases. Up next it’s P.Reign (@preign) featuring @Drake with a #1 on the Emerging Chart Monday with “DnF.”

“The Thong Song” artist is back - @Sisqo had a top ten debut single this week with “A-List.”

Music videos matter
With 94 million views and counting, @NickiMinaj’s video for “Anaconda” is something of a pop culture phenomenon. Her provocative single cover was an instant meme and the single is the #2 song on the Popular Chart this week.

The Popular Chart’s top track of the week goes to Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) for “Shake It Off.” The song has 50 million view so far and broke the @Billboard record for the highest debut on the Adult Pop Charts.

Punk pranksters @TrashTalk readied “The Great Escape” with an official music video, a self-described “cautionary tale about the effects of excellent hardcore music.”
