The Billboard Trending 140: Sept. 2-9

Friday, 12 September 2014

Infinite, the seven-member South Korean K-pop group, ascended to the top spot on the overall Emerging chart with their song “Last Romeo,” making them the first K-pop group to ever do so. The release of an incredible dance practice video (over 700K views to date) garnered great excitement, triggering the rise in conversation this week.

This week, two artists from two well-known bands entered different charts with new projects. @KarenO (from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) was the proud owner of two songs on the overall Emerging charts, with “Crush” at #3 and “Days Go By” at #6, both off of her new solo album which was released on Sept. 9 in the U.S.

In the same time period, @JCandTheVoidz (@Casablancas_J from @TheStrokes) took the #1 and #5 spots on the Emerging debuts chart for the week, with “Human Sadness” and “Where No Eagles Fly,” respectively.

@Meghan_Trainor made her way to #7 on the overall Popular chart with her smash hit, “All About That Bass.” This comes on the heels of today’s announcement, where her song reached #1 on this week’s @Billboard Hot 100. Her new EP came out on Sept. 9 in the U.S.

@samsmithworld’s cover of “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman – performed at the Live Lounge – gave him the #1 spot on the Top Popular debuts chart. He also released a new song this week called “I’m Not The Only One” featuring @asvpxrocky. The track already has over 510,000 streams on SoundCloud.

@Maroon5’s new album “V” dropped on Sept. 2 and was promoted with the hashtag #VDay. It ended up with the #1 spot on the Billboard 200, and their song “Maps” remained in the top 10 on the overall Popular chart.

Emerging artists shine
It’s now six weeks in a row for canadian singer-songwriter @Kiesza and her song “Hideaway,” which remains within the top three spots in the overall Emerging chart.

@AudioPush, whose song “Mary Jane” was on the overall Emerging Top 10 last week, re-enters the chart again, but this time with their song “No Secret.” We’ll see if their song, “Reppin,” with it’s video that just premiered, makes it into the charts next week.

@FKAtwigs continues to dazzle with her cover of “Stay With Me,” which debuted at #10 on the Top Emerging debuts. Like @samsmithworld above, @FKAtwigs also performed it at the Live Lounge on BBC Radio 1 and is receiving rave reviews.

Music videos matter
@ddlovato’s “Really Don’t Care” is at #4 on the overall Popular charts, and her video, which was released in June, continues to rack up the views. It’s currently at over 38 million views and counting. The song’s price was also dropped to $.69 this past week on iTunes, leading to additional excitement and chatter for the song.

@Sia is another artist whose video continues to drive considerable excitement for her great music. The video won “Best Choreography” at the Video Music Awards, and the views just kept coming. At over 167 million views, her video continues to perform, and as a result, the song remained on the overall Popular charts, actually jumping one spot from last week, to #9.
