Murray v Djokovic - the Twitter battle

Wimbledon is one of the most-loved fixtures in the UK sporting calendar, and each year we see a global conversation take place on Twitter throughout the two-week event.

When major events happen in the world, they also happen on Twitter, like the two men’s semi-finals on Friday which generated more than one million mentions on Twitter over the course of the day.

Djokovic (@DjokerNole) has more followers than Murray (@Andy_Murray), with Djokovic having passed the two million mark during the Wimbledon fortnight, while the British star has 1.7 million.

But when it came to mentions on Twitter during yesterday’s two big semi-finals, Andy Murray was the winner. Mentions of Murray’s Twitter handle peaked at 11,784 mentions per minute, while Djokovic’s @ name peaked at 4,442 mentions per minute, during their respective matches.

Twitter brings people closer to the things they care about, and the two best men’s tennis players in the world use Twitter regularly to give fans an insight into their lives.

They also use it to chat to other sporting heroes - such as Murray having a conversation with the former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Lennox Lewis, ahead of his semi-final:
