Announcing a second #RoyalBaby on Twitter

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s household @ClarenceHouse took to Twitter today to announce the surprise news of a new #RoyalBaby to their followers around the globe:


The announcement has already got people talking on Twitter. Since 8 a.m. GMT this morning, there have been more than 260,000 mentions of the news, including more than 70,000 uses of the hashtag #RoyalBabyThis visualisation from @TwitterReverb shows how the #RoyalBaby news spread:

Of course, it’s not the first time a royal arrival has been announced on Twitter. Prince George’s birth in 2013 was also heralded this way. At the time, the @ClarenceHouse team increased its follower numbers by 50%, and there were some notable spikes in Twitter conversation about the news, as people came together to celebrate the arrival. There were:

  • 25,300 Tweets per minute when news of Prince George’s arrival broke
  • 18,000 Tweets per minute when Prince George was photographed outside the hospital
  • From the moment the Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to hospital until the moment the Prince George’s name was announced, there were more than six million mentions of the news on Twitter.

Today, #RoyalBaby was the top trending topic in the UK and worldwide, and political leaders and celebrities alike flocked to the platform to share their congratulations:
