The 2014/15 football season concludes on Twitter

Monday, 1 June 2015

The English football season signed off with a flourish on Saturday when @Arsenal beat Aston Villa (@AVFCOfficial) 4-0 to retain the FA Cup.

The pick of the goals - by @Alexis_Sanchez - was Tweeted out within moments by broadcaster @btsportfootball, as the Cup conversation continued in real time on Twitter:

And Sanchez was joined by his team-mates in Tweeting celebration photos soon after the final whistle:

Ahead of the Cup Final, The @FA gave away its last pair of tickets by sending them up in a balloon and Tweeting GPS coordinates to fans. The lucky winner was a grandma walking a dog in a village in Kent. She donated the tickets to her Arsenal-supporting grandson:

The FA also ran a fan poll to determine which team was going to win the prestigious trophy, and @Arsenal prevailed by a margin of 57% to 43%:

@BBCSport, meanwhile, had its own Twitter vote on match day, to find the greatest Cup goal in 50 years, and Ryan Giggs was crowned winner for his wonder strike against Arsenal in the 1999 final:

Both 2015 finalists had built up to the match by giving their fans special access to the players via Twitter.

The Gunners took fan messages and printed them on special shirts, which the players - who included Santi Cazorla (@19SCazorla) and @_OlivierGiroud_ - wore and then signed to send back to their supporters:

Aston Villa selected Tweets and printed them out to inspire their players in the dressing room.

On the day, Periscope (@periscopeco) brought fans closer to the action than ever before, with @FA live broadcasting from the tunnel, as the players prepared to walk on to the pitch.

And video helped to capture Arsenal’s celebration parade on the streets of north London on Sunday, with @aaronramsey taking aim, and just missing, an open window when he tried to gift a souvenir scarf to a fan.

That victory parade was preceded by another London celebration, six days earlier, when @ChelseaFC rejoiced in their @PremierLeague title win on an open-top bus and recorded the journey in a series of Vine videos:

@Chelsea were crowned champions of England, but it was @ManUtd who took that honour in the Twitter table. Here’s how the final standings based on Twitter conversation, instead of on-pitch success:

And what if the 2014/15 team of the season was determined by Twitter mentions rather than form?:
