Guest post: How The Alannah and Madeline Foundation use Twitter to help reduce violence towards children

Friday, 4 July 2014

Almost one million Australian children – nearly one in five kids – have lived with violence in the home. It’s easy to dismiss this as someone else’s problem, but we all have a responsibility to keep our kids safe.

Inspired by the tragic deaths of Luke Batty and sisters Savannah and Indianna, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation (@alannahmadeline) is running the Stand Up for Our Kids campaign on Twitter and elsewhere from 29 June to 5 July to raise awareness of the impact of family violence on children and to empower everyone to take a stand against violence.

@TwitterAU is supporting Stand Up for Our Kids by helping us to amplify the campaign message online (including this post) to bring the community together in facing the issue, for until we get real about the problem, we can’t be serious about finding a solution.

As with many charities, Twitter is a key platform for The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to generate online conversations about key issues related to our work of keeping children safe from violence. For organisations like ours, Twitter continues to be an essential tool to raise awareness about the impact of family violence on children.

The Foundation’s vision is that every child live in a safe and supportive environment. We are asking everyone to ‘stand up’ for all the children we cherish and to remember those we have lost to violence by taking the pledge to keep children safe.

You can also donate to The Alannah and Madeline Foundation initiatives that care for children so deeply impacted by violence, and reduce violence in the lives of children. Spread the message and help us to raise awareness by joining the conversation with @alannahmadeline and via #StandUpforOurKids.
