How the Victorian leaders debate played out on Twitter

Wednesday, 19 November 2014

In an Australian political first, the @theheraldsun tonight used Twitter’s @SnappyTV editing tool to Tweet out video highlights of the leaders’ debate as Victorian Premier Denis Napthine (@Vic_Premier) and Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews (@DanielAndrewsMP) went head-to-head in Frankston at the #pplsforum.

Viewers watching the debate, hosted by @SkyNewsAust in partnership with the @theheraldsun, Tweeted along during the broadcast using the hashtag #pplsforum to have their voices heard on Twitter.

Even though they weren’t invited to participate, the @VictorianGreens and @TheNationalsVic weren’t going to be left out:

Many party colleagues also joined in, amplifying the reach of the debate:

The debate is the latest example of creative uses of Twitter by the Victorian political parties, leaders and media to engage voters online. In recent weeks, @LiberalVictoria, @VictorianLabor and @VictorianGreens have been pumping out colourful and engaging content using a host of engaging Twitter tools, including:

Tweeting in-stream videos to amplify campaign messages:

Using @vine for calls to action and behind the scenes access:

Holding Twitter exclusive Q&As to engage directly with voters:

And even needling rivals and having a bit of fun on the campaign trail:

So with the #pplsforum done and dusted, the #vicviotes campaign enters the final furlong. Stay tuned to Twitter in the lead up to election day to see the latest from the parties and candidates and to have your say on all matters #vicpol before you cast your vote.
