We all miss seeing our favourite footy players busting the line, dishing out big hits or performing match-winning heroics. But many of the most-loved retired NRL players of seasons past have taken to Twitter to share their personalities and insights into the game we love.

As we lead up to the @NRL grand final (#NRLGF), we created a list of some of our favourite players who have hung up their boots but thankfully haven’t given the Twitter game away. Make sure you follow them to get their unique perspective on the biggest week of the footy season.

@MarioFenech
274 first grades games
Retired in 1995

As a former @SSFCRabbitohs captain, Mario is a great legend to follow in the lead up to the #NRLGF as the Bunnies build up to their first grand final since 1971.

“The Maltese Falcon” – one of the stars of the @NRLFootyShow – is a very active Twitter user, giving his followers behind-the-scenes access to his interactions with fans, thoughts on the game and what he does in his spare time:

@markMGgeyer
180 first grade games
Retired in 2000

“MG” is one of Penrith’s favourite sons, having delivered a match-winning performance for @PenrithPanthers in the 1991 grand final against @RaidersCanberra.

Nowadays, @MarkMGGeyer is a popular media personality and self-styled “man of the people,” offering his unique perspective on modern day footy:

He’s also not shy to Tweet about his rockstar mates, poke fun at himself or boast about his mountain climbing exploits!

@StevePrice
313 first grade games
Retired in 2009

@StevePrice is @QLD_Maroon’s most capped forward who led the @NRLBulldogs to Premierships in 1995 and 2004. Steve is one of the greats of the modern game and his Twitter account shows he’s still a keen fan who doesn’t pull any punches with his opinions.

@StevePrice is also a big follower of many other sports which he talks about regularly, as well as giving shouts-outs to his mates in other codes:

@SteveMenzies11
477 first grade games
Retired in 2013

The most recently retired of our @NRL Twitter legends is @SteveMenzies11, which might explain why this style guru still looks pretty good in a suit.

Steve uses Twitter to give his fans a fun glimpse into his life post-footy:

Like most of these legends, @SteveMenzies11 can’t get rugby league out of his system, making him another great one to follow to read his reactions to games as they happen:
