Guest post: Time for a six-second short film festival

Dachshunds. Weekends. Tyrion Lannister. Three things that are short, but awesome!

Joining them is #TROPVINE: the short filmmaking competition where the movies are no more than six seconds long. #TROPVINE is the lovechild of @TROPFEST, Australia’s most prestigious short film festival, and Twitter’s short video app, @Vine, and entries are now open to Vine artists, wherever in the world they might be.

I was lucky enough to take out the inaugural #TROPVINE competition in 2014 with this entry:

Winning #TROPVINE has created opportunities in the filmmaking industry for me that would have otherwise been impossible. My winning entry, “Mirror Copy,” went on to be nominated for a Shorty Award, up against Michelle Obama’s, for ‘Vine of the Year’ in New York.

Flying over to attend the ceremony was an invaluable opportunity to finally meet in person many talented @Vine creators who I knew through the platform. And while I was there I also met with the people at @Vine HQ and was invited into Mashable for a fun Vine duel!

For a chance to be the 2015 winner, entrants from anywhere in the world need to make an original Vine film, using this year’s TSI (Tropfest Signature Item) ‘CARD’, and Tweet it to @TROPFEST using the competition hashtags #TROPVINE and #CARD. Entries close on 31 July 2015.

The TROPVINE finalists will be screened live at the #TROPVINE Festival Night at Sydney’s X-Studio on 12 August, with the winner announced at the end of the night by The Tropfest Jury.

The winner will take home a lot of awesome booty, including a cash prize of $AUD5,000, a Nikon camera and kit pack, a year of Spotify premium, PLUS a VIP trip to Sydney for Tropfest Australia 2015 this December, including Qantas flights to Sydney (from within Australia) and accommodation at luxury arts hotel QT Sydney. Not sure where to start? Here’s my top three tips to creating a winning #TROPVINE video:

  1. Check out what other people are doing on there and get inspired
  2. Don’t be daunted if you spend hours making a single Vine
  3. Get a simple tripod if you’re planning to do stop-motion
