Celebrating women that inspire around the world

Tuesday, 8 March 2016

Women around the world discuss topics and issues that are important to them every day on Twitter. From challenging female stereotypes using hashtags like #ILookLikeAnEngineer, to encouraging substantive dialogue on the red carpet with #SmartGirlsAsk, women use Twitter to raise awareness, build community, and be heard.

In celebration of International Women’s Day this week, we want to take a special moment to honour the amazing women who’ve made a difference, both on and off Twitter, in ways big and small. As we celebrate International Women’s Day events at our offices across the globe, we also want to bring the celebrations to you.  We’re inviting everyone to Tweet about the women in their life with #SheInspiresMe to join a global celebration of their impact. To mark the occasion, each Tweet with that hashtag will unlock a Twitter emoji during the month of March.

We’ve already started sharing our stories:

We’re passionate about gender equality and support making it a reality through initiatives like HeForShe (@HeForShe), a solidarity movement led by the United Nations (@UN) that encourages men to be part of the change. We’re inviting men to make the HeForShe commitment by clicking on “Count Me In” — and anyone who Tweets #HeForShe will discover a special Twitter emoji.

And through ongoing global initiatives like #PositionOfStrength, we continue to work with organisations in countries, including Australia, to teach women how to exercise their voice and safely use Twitter.

Through Tweets sent from all corners of the globe every day, women have been able to express themselves, shed light on important issues, and join a community of allies. With the world as their stage, any woman can ignite conversations and effect change.
