Recognising Indigenous Australians as part of #NRW2016

Twitter is the social platform for Australia’s biggest influencers. It’s also the platform which can transform anyone into an influencer. Whether it’s #BlackLivesMatter, #RefugeesWelcome, #HeForShe or #LoveWins - we are proud that everyday our users harness the power of Twitter to create a movement for voices that would otherwise not be heard.

This week, as part of National Reconciliation Week (#NRW2016), we are announcing our commitment to support the Indigenous Australian community and to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to utilise Twitter to share their stories and strengthen their causes.

The first step towards reconciliation is recognition and on Twitter we use verification to recognise and establish authenticity of identities of key individuals and brands on Twitter.

As a first step of our long-term reconciliation action plan we have recently verified 50+ Indigenous Australian individuals and organisations who are key influencers in the community. Here is a Moment that showcases some of those accounts.

We are also working with key organisations such as @IndigenousX to map out our next steps for how we can support Indigenous Australians and we welcome feedback from the broader community.
