Twitter reveals first ever Women’s World Cup #GoldenTweet Award winners

Tuesday, 16 July 2019

Football fans around the world joined the real-time #FIFAWWC global viewing party on Twitter throughout the thrilling tournament to discuss all of the action on and off the pitch.

After 52 matches, a USA tournament victory and Golden Boot, there’s one more announcement left to make...the winners of the inaugural Women’s World Cup #GoldenTweet Awards!

Today the global #GoldenTweet Awards will be awarded to the best content on Twitter from the fans, players and commentators that participated in the #FIFAWWC conversation.

Throughout the global tournament, Twitter analysed the data to identify the most interesting Tweets shared across the world.

Australian Twitter users showed their love of the game, a huge swell of national support for The Matildas, and Tweeted with a uniquely Aussie flair. Here are the five winners by category:

The Tweet about Mike Magee’s (@magee18) daughter and the importance of role models was selected by Twitter’s team, who reviewed global data to identify the most impactful Tweets related to this year’s #FIFAWWC conversation around the world.

Winners will receive a limited edition #GoldenTweet trophy.

Suzy Nicoletti, Managing Director, Twitter Australia said: “It has truly been a triumphant and game-changing Women’s World Cup tournament that has set pulses racing and sparked conversations and debates on and off the pitch. Aside from the fantastic displays shown in every match, the Tweets that were produced gave the world real-time insights into the highs, the lows, the passion and humour that can be evoked from the beautiful game.

“People want to watch and talk about women’s sports. When it comes to coverage of women’s sports globally, there is a lot of work to be done and Twitter is helping to fill that void. Twitter makes the conversation around sports a level playing field by uniting fans across gender, age groups and location. As sports is one of the biggest conversations on our platform, we bring people closer to the action, closer to the fans and closer to the players themselves.”
