For the last three days, royal watchers around the world have followed the news of a #RoyalBaby on Twitter.

And this evening, the last chapter of that fairy tale was revealed as @ClarenceHouse announced the name the royal couple have chosen for the future heir to the throne:

From when the Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to hospital until the moment the baby’s name was announced, there have been more than six million mentions of the news on Twitter.

The team at @ClarenceHouse have sent updates of this unique occasion to their Twitter followers, sharing this special moment with well-wishers from around the globe. That Twitter account increased its follower numbers by 50%, going from more than 237,000 followers to more than 366,000 over the last three days.

Throughout this exciting time, Twitter has been the global town square where people have come to share in their delight at this once-in-a-generation moment, as they welcome the newest addition to the Royal Family to the world.
