Twitter voting comes to the BRITs

Tuesday, 18 February 2014

For the first time ever, tomorrow’s BRIT Awards (@BRITAwards) will feature a live Twitter vote to decide which act will walk away with the Best British Music Video award.

Music fans will be able to propel their favourite acts up the table by voting with a specific hashtag on Twitter. The hashtags will be revealed live on air and voting window will be open throughout the show, which takes place at London’s O2 Arena (@TheO2) from 8pm, and will be broadcast on ITV (@ITV) and on YouTube

The nominees for Best British Music Video are, of course, all on Twitter — @CalvinHarris, @EllieGoulding, @JohnNewmanMusic, @NaughtyBoyMusic and @OneDirection, joining 41 of the 42 nominees on the platform.

There have already been over half a million mentions of the hashtag #BRITs2014 on Twitter — an incredible 28 times more than #BRITs2013 had been used at the same point last year.

Twitter and music go hand in hand.

In fact, seven of the ten most-followed Twitter accounts in the world belong to musicians, and three out of the five top ten retweets of 2013 were music-related.

Tomorrow’s show has already been dubbed the most social BRITs ever — and the team behind the @BRITAwards account have Twitter as the first place for fans to keep up to speed with the latest news and developments about the ceremony. In January, the team used Twitter and Vine to break the news of the nominations and build anticipation ahead of the ceremony:

This week, the BRITs and VO5 (@VO5) have also announced that they have teamed up in the first ever UK Twitter Amplify programme. Twitter Amplify will give music fans the chance to see amazing near-live clips from Wednesday’s awards ceremony directly on Twitter for the first time.

The clips will be tweeted from the @BRITAwards Twitter account and will cover highlights from before, during and after the ceremony, as well as performances from the night.

As well as following @BRITAwards, you can get closer to the action by following the nominees and performers by using this Twitter list and following the hashtag #BRITs2014.

The BRITS will feature live performances from the biggest names in music including Arctic Monkeys (@ArcticMonkeys), Katy Perry (@KatyPerry), Bruno Mars (@BrunoMars), Bastille (@BastilleDan), Rudimental (@RudimentalUK), Ellie Goulding (@EllieGoulding), Lorde (@LordeMusic), Disclosure (@Disclosure) and Pharrell Williams (@Pharrell).
