Indians around the world came together and celebrated India’s 68th Republic Day yesterday. Joining in the tri-colour festivities, Twitter launched a #RepublicDay emoji for the second year running to give users a fun way to Tweet, share and celebrate the historic day with Indians worldwide.

The emoji design is a beautiful interpretation of the Indian tricolour and it appeared when people included any of the nine English and Indian-language hashtags in their Tweets.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) used the #RepublicDay emoji in his special Republic Day 2017 greeting to the country on Twitter.

From politicians, athletes, entertainers to Indians from all walks of life, people around the world flocked to Twitter to share their Republic Day greetings. This year, we saw over 910,000 #RepublicDay conversations on Twitter, which peaked at 10:52am on January 26th with more than 1,200 Tweets per minute.
