#FutureOfTelangana: Young voters and the democratic process

Election time is to politics, what a ‘world cup’ is to cricket. The passions run high, the excitement is palpable and even the most disinterested people find themselves in related conversations. The ‘first time voters’ are particularly excited about their final passage to adulthood which involves deciding the government of the day. This sentiment is only heightened in a state like Telangana, which is going to polls only for the second time after its formation and is in a unique position to chart its own course with the upcoming election.

In this context, Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (@ylacindia) and @TwitterIndia collaborated to create a safe space for young people to discuss the #FutureOfTelangana directly with leaders from all major political parties represented in the state ahead of this all important state election.

The day started on a high note with a discussion around the need for young people to engage with the democratic process of the country and what ripples it could have on our collective future. @PayalKamat, representative from @TwitterIndia shared the new regional language state elections related hashtags that Twitter has recently launched. These now enable voters to follow conversation around their state’s elections in one place and amplify regional voices. 

This soon gave way to conversations among the young participants around the top issues for Telangana this election. The themes that were discussed were: Education, health, economy, governance, gender and social justice. Participants brought their unique perspectives to the table representing the diversity of opinion in the room. For example, on one of the tables discussing economy, there was a debate on whether Telangana should continue its focus on becoming the IT Hub in the country or should it more proactively look at diversifying its drivers of economy, so that development reaches beyond Hyderabad area. Many people came prepared with data around issues that they felt passionately about. They put their thoughts and suggestions out on Twitter. Several other people joined in the conversation online. By noon we had a lot of great questions waiting to be put forth to the panelists.

On the panel, we had leading figures Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM) @asadowaisi, Dr. Narsaiah Goud @narsaiah (TRS), Dr. Sravan Dasoju @sravandasoju (INC), Mr. N Ramchander Rao @raomlc (BJP) and Mr. Tulla Veerender Goud @veerendertulla (TDP). This panel was moderated by Ms. Uma Sudhir @umasudhir, executive editor at NDTV. Although in the thick of a hard fought election, they were excited to meet this bunch of young voters. Each panelist was asked to lay out the top five priorities for Telangana youth in the next five years according to their party. 

This exposed interesting difference of opinions towards education and health spending, priorities on infrastructure and effectiveness of social security measures like unemployment allowance in the state. Neha Swain (@Neha_swain), co-founder of Rubaroo (@RubarooHyd) also joined the panel to discuss the lack of representation of women in Telangana politics and how parties could make a concerted effort to get more women candidates.

There was also a focused discussion on centre-state relations and what that could mean for Telangana as it lays out its future trajectory. The Twitter audience asked some very pertinent questions on underspending on schemes that were announced earlier, issues of fake news, the basis of coalitions this election and the report card of the outgoing government.

Although some very hard-hitting questions were raised, the mood remained jovial with panelists taking each other head on, yet honouring the sincerity of questions from young people in the room. The panel witnessed both serious discussions on policy issues and gave a good peek into the political mood of the state. 

After the discussions closed, many participants shared how they had never imagined to be in the same room with these political figures. Some were also surprised by how educated and well informed the political representatives were, beyond the cynicism painted by mainstream media. Some said that this interaction made them realize how complex policymaking is.

By the end of the day, there was a new-found sense of purpose in the room with these young people feeling like an integral part of the democratic process. The amplification through Twitter helped bring forward the real concerns of young voters and our panelists carried some of the issues raised back to their parties for further deliberation.

#FutureofTelangana hopefully sowed seeds in some young people who got inspired at this event to take up the mantle of civic engagement. Democracy is afterall ‘not a safe harbour, but a beckoning goal’ towards which we constantly need to advance together through small steps like this one!

ప్రజాస్వామ్య ప్రక్రియలో ముందంజలో యువ ఓటర్లు: #FutureofTelangana

క్రికెట్ కు ప్రపంచకప్ ఎలాగో, రాజకీయాలకు ఎన్నికలూ అంతే. ఈ సమయంలో రాజకీయ వాతావరణం ఎంత ఉత్సాహంగా ఉంటుందంటే, రాజకీయాలంటే ఆసక్తి చూపని వారు కూడా,  వివిధ రకాల చర్చల్లో  పాల్గొంటారు. మరీ ముఖ్యంగా తొలిసారి ఓటు వేసే యువత,రాబోయే ప్రభుత్వాన్ని ఎన్నుకోవడంలో అవకాశం లభించినందుకు ఉత్సాహంతో ఉన్నారు. రాష్ట్రం ఏర్పడిన తరువాత రెండవ సారి ఎన్నికలు జరుగుతున్న తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రంలో ఈ సెంటిమెంట్ అధికంగా ఉంది. దేశంలోనే ఒక ప్రత్యేకమైన స్థానాన్నిఏర్పరచుకోవడానికి తెలంగాణకు ఈ ఎన్నికలు ఒక అవకాశంగా మారబోతున్నాయి.

తెలంగాణ భవిష్యత్తు (#FutureOfTelangana)గురించి యువతీ యువకులు,  వివిధ పార్టీలకు చెందిన రాజకీయ నాయకులతో నేరుగా చర్చించడానికి యంగ్ లీడర్స్ ఫర్ ఆక్టివ్ సిటిజన్ షిప్(@ylacindia)  మరియు ట్విట్టర్ ఇండియా @TwitterIndia సంయుక్తంగా చర్చా వేదికను ఏర్పాటు చేశాయి.

ప్రజాస్వామ్య ప్రక్రియల్లో యువత భాగస్వామ్యం కావాల్సిన ఆవశ్యకత మరియు దాని పర్యవసనంగా సమాజంలో చోటుచేసుకునే మార్పుల గురించిన అంశంపై చర్చా కార్యక్రమం ప్రారంభమైంది. ఈ సందర్భంగా పాయల్ కామత్(@PayalKamat@TwitterIndia), వివిధ రాష్ట్రాల ఎన్నికలకు సంబంధించి ఆయా ప్రాంతీయ భాషల్లో ట్విట్టర్ రూపొందించిన హ్యాష్ ట్యాగ్ లను ఆవిష్కరించారు. ఈ హ్యాష్ ట్యాగ్ ల ద్వారా ఓటర్లకు, వారి రాష్ట్రాల ఎన్నికలకు సంబంధించిన అన్ని రకాలైన విషయాలను ఒకేచోట అందుబాటులో ఉండేలా చేయడంతో పాటు, ప్రాంతీయ భాషల గొంతుకలను విస్తృత పరచనుంది.

తదనంతరం, తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రంలోని ముఖ్యమైన అంశాలపై, కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గొన్న యువత తమ అభిప్రాయాలను వ్యక్త పరిచారు. విద్య, ఆరోగ్యం, ఆర్థిక వ్యవస్థ, ప్రభుత్వ పాలన, మహిళా మరియు సామాజిక న్యాయం వంటి ముఖ్యమైన అంశాలు చర్చకు వచ్చాయి. చర్చలో పాల్గొన్న యువత, తమదైన అభిప్రాయాలను  వ్యక్తపరచడంతో, వైవిధ్యమైన ఆలోచనలను పంచుకోవడానికి ఈ కార్యక్రమం వేదికైందని చెప్పవచ్చు.  ఆర్థిక అంశాలపై చర్చ జరుగుతున్న ఒక టేబుల్ దగ్గర, తెలంగాణ దేశానికి ఐటీ హబ్ లా మారే అంశంపై దృష్టి సారించాలా లేక  ఆర్థిక రంగంలోని కీలక అంశాలను విస్తృత పరిచి, హైదరాబాద్ వెలుపల సైతం అభివృద్ధి జరిగేలా చర్యలు తీసుకోవాలా అనే అంశంపై చర్చ జరిగింది. చాలా మంది వివిధ అంశాలకు సంబంధించిన సమాచారాన్ని ముందుగానే  సిద్ధం చేసుకుని ,వారి వారి అలోచనలను , సూచనలను ట్విట్టర్ లో పంచుకున్నారు. మరికొంత మంది  ఆన్ లైన్ ద్వారా కార్యక్రమం లో పాల్గొన్నారు. మధ్యాహ్నం సమయాని కల్లా ప్రతినిధుల ముందుంచాల్సిన చాలా మంచి ప్రశ్నలు మాకు లభించాయి. 

ప్యానెల్ లో అసదుద్దీన్ ఓవైసీ(ఏఐఎంఐఎం), డా.బూర నర్సయ్య గౌడ్( టీఆర్ఎస్), డా. దాసోజు శ్రవణ్(కాంగ్రెస్), ఎన్.రాంచదర్  రావు(బీజేపీ), తూళ్ల వీరేందర్ గౌడ్( టీడీపీ) సభ్యులుగా పాల్గొన్నారు.   ఈ ప్యానల్ కు ఎన్డీటీవి ఎగ్జిక్యూటివ్ ఎడిటర్ ఉమా సుధీర్ పర్యవేక్షకులుగా ఉన్నారు. ఎన్నికల సమయంలో ఎంత బిజీగా ఉన్నప్పటికీ,  యువ ఓటర్లతో సమావేశం కావడానికి ప్యానల్ సభ్యులు  చాలా ఉత్సాహం చూపారు. ప్రతి ప్యానెల్ సభ్యుడిని, వచ్చే ఐదు సంవత్సరాలలో తెలంగాణ యువతకు వారి పార్టీ తరుపును ప్రాధాన్యం ఇచ్చే మొదటి ఐదు అంశాలపై వివరించవలసిందిగా కోరడం జరిగింది.

ఈ చర్చ ద్వారా విద్య, ఆరోగ్య ఖర్చులు, మౌలిక సదుపాయాల కల్పనలోని ప్రాధాన్యతలు, నిరుద్యోగ భృతి వంటి సాంఘిక సంక్షేమ చర్యల ప్రభావంపై విభిన్నమైన అభిప్రాయాలను ప్యానెల్ సభ్యులు వ్యక్తపరిచారు. రుబారో(@RubarooHyd) సహ వ్యవస్థాపకులు నేహా స్వైన్(@Neha_swain), తెలంగాణ రాజకీయాల్లో మహిళల ప్రాతినిధ్యం లేకపోవడం మరియు మరింత మంది మహిళా అభ్యర్థులను భాగస్వామ్యం చేయడానికి రాజకీయ పార్టీలు ఏ విధంగా కృషి చేయ్యాలో కూడా చర్చించారు.

ఈ కార్యక్రమంలో కేంద్ర, రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వాల సంబంధాలు మరియు తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రంపై దాని  ప్రభావం గురించి చర్చించడం జరిగింది.  కొంతమంది ప్రజలు ట్విట్టర్ ద్వారా చర్చా కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గొని, ముందుగా ప్రకటించిన పథకాలపై తక్కువ ఖర్చు చేయడం, నకిలీ వార్తలు, ఎన్నికల్లో సంకీర్ణాల ప్రాతిపాదికతో పాటు, ప్రస్తుత ప్రభుత్వం యొక్క పనితీరుపై వివిధ ప్రశ్నలు అడగటం జరిగింది.

యువతీ యువకులు కొన్ని క్లిష్టమైన ప్రశ్నలు లేవనెత్తినప్పటికీ, ప్యానలిస్ట్ లు సుహృద్భావంతో,  యువత యొక్క ప్రశ్నల్లో ఉన్న నిబద్దతతను గౌరవించారు. ప్యానల్ సభ్యులు పాలసీ అంశాలు మరియు రాష్ట్ర రాజకీయ వాతావరణం పై తమ దృక్కోణాన్ని తెలియజేసారు.

చర్చలు ముగిసిన తరువాత, కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గన్న చాలా మంది వ్యక్తులు, రాజకీయ నాయకులతో ఇలాంటి కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గొంటామని ఊహించలేదన్నారు. మీడియా ప్రచారాలకు భిన్నంగా, రాజకీయ నాయకులు ఎంతో విద్యావంతులు కావడంతో పాటు,  ప్రశ్నలకు  బాగా సమాచారం అందించడం చూసిన యువత ఆశ్చర్యపడ్డారు. కార్యక్రమంలో పాల్గొన్న వారు మాట్లాడుతూ, ప్రభుత్వ విధానాలు రూపొందించడం ఎంత కష్టమో ఈ చర్చా కార్యక్రమం ద్వారా తెలుసుకున్నామన్నారు.

కార్యక్రమం ముగిసే నాటికి, యువత మేము సైతం ప్రజాస్వామ్య ప్రక్రియలో ముఖ్యమే అని భావించడంతో, అక్కడి వాతావరణం నూతనోత్సాహంతో నిండిపోయింది. ట్విట్టర్ చొరవతో, మరింత మంది యువత ఆలోచనలను నాయకుల ముందుంచడంతో పాటు, సమావేశంలో లేవనెత్తిన కొన్ని అంశాలను నాయకులు, తదుపరి చర్చల కోసం వారి వారి పార్టీల దృష్టికి తీసుకెళ్లడం జరిగింది.

ఫ్యూచర్ ఆఫ్ తెలంగాణ(#FutureofTelangana) చర్చా కార్యక్రమం ద్వారా ప్రభావితులైన యువత, మరింత మందిని ప్రజాస్వామ్య ప్రక్రియలో భాగస్వామ్యం చేయాలని సంకల్పించుకున్నారు. ప్రజాస్వామ్యం ఒక నిర్థిష్టైన లక్ష్యం కాదు, ఒక నిరంతరమైన ప్రయాణం.  ప్రజాస్వామ్యం కోసం ఇలాంటి కార్యక్రమాల ద్వారా ఒక్కో అడుగు ముందుకు వేస్తూ ఎప్పటికప్పుడు మెరుగవుతూ ఉండాలి.
