As part of our #TwitterForGood remote week of service last week, our team has launched a Campaigns for Change program for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), incorporating a series of workshops for nonprofit partners around the region. The purpose of this was to prioritize support for NGO partners to develop and launch a campaign that will drive impact for a certain cause at a regional level. Campaigns for Change are centered around Twitter for Good’s following six areas of focus:
With the emergence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, our team decided to focus on Crisis and Emergency Response and Internet Safety training to help our partners better utilize the platform at a time of crisis. To achieve this, our Twitter MENA team volunteered to provide five different workshops on Twitter’s tools and policies to help NGOs develop creative strategies and launch powerful campaigns on Twitter. While all campaigns focused on COVID-19, each organization approached this differently.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (@IFRC_MENA) was the first to attend our workshops.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (@ICRC_ar) also joined our efforts and created a Twitter-based fundraising campaign for COVID-19 relief:
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (@UNHCR_Arabic) launched a Q&A campaign under #Ask_UNHCR, inviting the audience to send questions on how COVID-19 has impacted health conditions in refugee camps. Answers will be broadcasted from first-responders on field duty at refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan:
In these unprecedented times of hardship and immense humanitarian challenges, our partnership with Twitter MENA is more important than ever. The health, economic, and social impact of COVID-19 is most desperate and immediate for the most vulnerable refugees and their host communities. This is the time to come together in solidarity, with the better use of Twitter’s creative and interactive features despite social distancing and confinement. #AskUNHCR calls everyone on the platform to engage with the people behind the UNHCR who experience humanitarian realities at first hand. We hope that through this collaborative initiative, we will not only raise awareness of the plight of refugees but also help make a tangible change towards alleviating the hardship refugees are now facing
As a digital rights organization, @SMEX is focusing on the importance of staying safe on the internet while millions of people continue to work and learn from home.
@Abdullah_Raesi, a young but growing influencer in the UAE, also participated by publishing a short video on the importance of positivity and optimism in times of crisis:
