Give back on #GivingTuesday

While many people are familiar with holiday shopping events like Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday celebrates charitable donations to causes and organizations across the globe. Today is the big day and there are several ways to get involved on Twitter.

#GivingTuesday was founded by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. We spoke with Henry Timms, Executive Director of 92nd Street Y, who shared what excites him most about today’s event.

“What we are seeing with #GivingTuesday is a real celebration of both philanthropy and community,” Timms began. “All of that is enabled by social media, but it is driven by a sense of deeper human connection and we think that is something really worth celebrating, especially this time of year.”

He also discussed Twitter’s role in making today successful by saying “It allows us, in real time, to see the scale of conversation taking place and action… (and) we’re really excited to find new ways to use the platform to stimulate philanthropy and deepen people’s connections to the causes that matter most.”

As the third annual #GivingTuesday (@GivingTues) takes place, folks in the United States and around the world can give back in numerous ways. Whether it’s donating to a food shelter in your local community or an organization on the other side of the globe, individuals and groups are encouraged to take this chance to help others during the holiday season. It’s truly inspiring to see all of the creative and meaningful ways people around the planet are contributing on this day.

To show your support after you give back, make sure you participate by joining the #Unselfie movement.

Take a picture of yourself holding a sign that explains how you donated, tag it #Unselfie and #GivingTuesday, and Tweet it to all your followers.

We’re committed to being a force for good, and we can’t wait to see all your charitable acts of kindness and creative #Unselfie(s) throughout the day. To learn more about #GivingTuesday and how you can donate or give back, check out all the opportunities available on their website
