Girls at the nonprofit Oasis for Girls received a graduation gift from Twitter.

An organization that aids girls and young women of color from disadvantaged communities in San Francisco, @OasisForGirls offers several programs in its year-long Springboard Series that focus on life skills, arts education and academic and career preparation. Twitter donated laptops to four girls who graduated from all three of the programs this year.

The four come from varying backgrounds and trying circumstances, said Jessica Van Tuyl executive director of Oasis For Girls, but they have all thrived at Oasis, improving their social and verbal skills, and demonstrating a new prowess at technology. Now all four are prepping for college, and they will take fresh laptops with them to keep learning and exploring.

“These laptops are a tremendous help to our girls and their families, as all of them are from low-income households.” — Jessica Van Tuyl

In addition to the laptops, we recently hosted the girls at our headquarters for a visit and invited Oasis to participate in our Nonprofit Fair last month. Twitter also served as Oasis’ official sponsor for its big fundraiser in 2013, Shine!, to help the group raise nearly $20,000.

Donating laptops to these girls, and supporting the mission of Oasis, is just a small step to better help some in our community bridge the digital divide.
