“Twitter is a very effective tool for politics,” says Scott Zumwalt (@szumwalt), senior director at Bully Pulpit Interactive (@BPIMedia), a digital marketing agency that works with political campaigns and nonprofit organizations. “It’s one of those places where we can find some of our most ardent supporters and engage them.”
Bully Pulpit worked with the Human Rights Campaign (@hrc) — the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights organization — for years leading up to the moment when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage equality. When the landmark ruling was issued in June, the planning paid off: the @hrc’s Promoted Tweets about #LoveWins generated more than 275,000 engagements.
“If there is an event that someone is talking about, Twitter allows the campaign or the candidate to be a part of that moment, to respond to those individuals,” Zumwalt says. “In order to capitalize on a moment, you have to be ready for the moment.”
