Twitter Australia has joined with Southern Cross Austereo’s (@SCA) ‘Hit Network’ to raise awareness surrounding various mental health issues many young Australians face, like depression.

Broadcasting to a national primetime audience on one of the biggest radio stations in the Southern Cross’, ‘Hit Network’ performed a mental health check-in with listeners during #PressPause, a special three-hour radio show hosted by @JulesLund and @BiancaDye.

Celebrities, politicians and health care professionals came together to discuss ways to deal with feelings of anxiety or depression and to encourage listeners to reach out for support in times of need.

@TwitterAU’s Director of Public Policy @tweetinjules talked about how bullying online can affect mental health and discussed the Twitter tools available through our new Safety Centre. She reminded listeners that to young Aussies, being bullied online can be as devastating as being bullied in the real world.

Many of @TwitterAU and @SCA’s safety partners also rallied to tell listeners they aren’t alone and encouraged them to seek help.

If you or people you know are experiencing online bullying, remind them to report the abuse to the service provider so that the situation can be assessed, and addressed. If someone you know may be at risk of self-harm, reach out to one of our Australian safety mental health partners, including @ReachOut_Aus.

If you see a Tweet showing evidence of similar concern, report it to Twitter using our in-Tweet reporting tools or by filling in this form. Our specially trained safety staff will reach out to help guide the person to professional help.

#PressPause put the spotlight on online safety awareness and mental health and asked young Australians to think before they Tweet. @TwitterAU is committed to continuing the conversation.
