#CFLTHISWEEK live streaming show debuts on Twitter

The 2017 @CFL season has kicked off and Twitter is once again where Canadian football fans will come to cheer one their favourite squads and tackle key topics from across the league.

New for 2017, the @CFL will be debuting #CFLTHISWEEK, a weekly news program airing live exclusively on Twitter. Filmed at the Twitter Canada HQ in Toronto, CFL’s Brodie Lawson (@BrodieLawson) and three-time Grey Cup champion Davis Sanchez (@DavisSanchez)‏ will host the program with guest appearances by CFL’s Max Rosenberg (@maxmillien).

The 30-minute program, airing will air live globally at 3:00pm ET every Wednesday will feature football news, player interviews and special guests, fun social stories surrounding the league, as well as fantasy picks and discussion.

“#CFLTHISWEEK is a show built for fans,” said Christina Litz, Senior Vice President, CFL Marketing and Content. “It will include all the great football content they've come to expect from the CFL along with new fun segments and interviews made for sharing - all on our fans favourite social platform twitter."

Top CFL Teams and Players on Twitter

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (@sskroughriders) enter the regular season as the @CFL team with the most Twitter followers with 20% more followers than they had at the start of the 2016 regular season.

However, it was the Ottawa REDBLACKS (@REDBLACKS) who were the big winners both on the field and on Twitter during the 2016 season. Not only did the @REDBLACKS capture their first-ever #GreyCup last season, they were also the @CFL team with the most mentions for the season with 1.3x more mentions than the 2nd-ranked Calgary Stampeders (@calstampeders) and 1.7x more mentions than the @sskroughriders.

This is how the nine @CFL teams ranked on Twitter during the 2016 season, in terms of total mentions:

  2. Calgary Stampeders (@calstampeders)
  3. Saskatchewan Roughriders (@sskroughriders)

The @REDBLACKS’ 2016 title win also a major Twitter benchmark with the #GreyCup hashtag used more than 155,000 times on Grey Cup Sunday alone.

Top superstars also owned the @CFL conversation on Twitter in 2016. @Ticats linebacker Simoni Lawrence (@Simoni_Lawrence) was the most mentioned position player during the 2016 season while several quarterbacks also dominated the conversation on the player side.

These were the five most mentioned @CFL quarterbacks on Twitter during the 2016 season:
