Tweeting the BRITs

Tonight was the biggest night in the UK music calendar - the BRIT Awards. Stars and fans alike gathered to watch star-studded performances from top acts, and find out who would pick up the coveted statuettes.

And when it came to the conversation on Twitter, the event was more talked about than ever before, with the awards trending across the UK throughout the day and during the live TV broadcast.

The most talked about moments on Twitter during the live show were:

  1. Mumford and Sons (@MumfordAndSons) win Best British Group, beating One Direction (@OneDirection) to the title
  2. Justin Timberlake (@JTimberlake) performs new single ‘Mirrors’
  3. One Direction (@OneDirection) perform Blondie (@BlondieOfficial) hit ‘One Way or Another’

The evening also saw One Direction’s @Harry_Styles’ follower count tip over 11 million, making him only the second UK act ever to hit the figure, following in the footsteps of @OfficialAdele.

Before the show even began, stars were already tweeting about the ceremony. Olly Murs revealed to fans that he beat the traffic by taking the tube:

During the ceremony, nominees shared their highs and lows with fans, with Emeli Sande (@emelisande) delighted to win the first award of the night, Best British Female Solo Artist:

Rapper Wretch 32 (@Wretch32) cheered on Emeli as she picked up her 2nd award, this time for MasterCard Best British Album of the Year:

Ben Howard (@BenHowardMusic) shared his excitement at picking up gongs for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best British Male Solo artist:

But Olly Murs (@OllyOfficial) and Calvin Harris (@CalvinHarris) were disappointed to miss out on an award, sharing this picture with fans:

The awards were closed by Emeli Sande, with the show organisers @BRITAwards posting this Vine video:

And as the ceremony drew to a close Twitter users were already thinking about next year’s award show with #Ellatothebrits2014 trending in the UK, in support of X Factor star @ella__Henderson.
