Love across the Twittersphere

What happens in the real world happens on Twitter, and love is no exception. Tweets saying “I love you,” “Je t’aime,” “te amo,” “ik hou van jou,” and “사랑해” are sent each day, so we looked into which countries are expressing that sentiment most.

This map shows people saying “I love you” across the world in 100 languages, ranked by Tweets per million population.

According to Twitter, the top five most loving countries are:

  1. Sweden
  2. Slovenia
  3. Israel
  4. United Arab Emirates
  5. Norway

When it came to the most ‘in love’ countries in the world, the UK failed to make the top 50, coming in 51st place behind countries such as Mongolia (17th), Kuwait (24th), Guadeloupe (30th) and Martinique (32nd).

While people regularly express their love for one another on Twitter, they also Tweet about major relationship milestones. Here we visualise a “calendar of love” showing when people are most likely to experience certain significant moments like marriage and divorce, according to their Tweets.

50 shades of Tweets

Since January 1, there have been more than four million Tweets relating to the movie. The three moments that have generated the greatest peaks in conversation* on Twitter to date have been:

  1. 24/07/14 - The premiere of the first “50 Shades of Grey” trailer
  2. 07/02/15 - A Twitter Q&A with the film’s star, Jamie Dornan, saw 151K Tweets via #AskJamieDornan
  3. 10/02/15 - Dornan appeared on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ and the clip went viral; on the same day, the film soundtrack was released.

Actor Jamie Dornan @JamieDornan has added more than 150,000 followers this year alone, and now has more than half a million followers on the platform. However he is still some way off the the most followed star of the film Rita Ora (@RitaOra) with 3.4 million Twitter followers.
