#EduTweet: A ‘Twitter for Educators’ program launched in India!

By
Thursday, 19 April 2018

Are India’s educators and school leaders leveraging the power of Twitter to engage with their wider community? Are they addressing media literacy and online safety with their students? And are they integrating social media in the classroom? These were some of the questions addressed during #EduTweet -- a new program for school leaders across the country -- launched in partnership with the School Leaders Network (@slnindia).

#EduTweet was launched at Nahar International School (@NaharNIS) in Mumbai with over 40 educators from across the city. The program was initiated in Delhi as well in a gathering of over 50 educators at Delhi’s Alchon International School.

The discussions were divided into three main buckets spanning thought leadership, media literacy and digital classrooms.

Francis Joseph (francis_joseph), co-founder of @slnindia welcomed the group, and explained the genesis of the idea.

In Delhi, we had with us Anil Swarup (@swarup58) Secretary, Education from the Human Resources Ministry of India as well as Swaroop Sampat (@yoswaroop), educationist. Both spoke passionately about using mediums like Twitter to deepen engagement and learn new ideas. Participants also got an introduction to Twitter, how to use it effectively to find your own community and also to drive the narrative and demonstrate thought leadership.

Media Literacy in schools

The second part of the workshops addressed the concepts of bullying, anonymity and fake news as part of media literacy education.

Digital classrooms

The groups then discussed how technology like Twitter can be integrated into the classroom, while ensuring it remains a safe space. Ideas such a private accounts for classes, where students can Tweet recaps of the lesson, and mobile journalism as a way to understand the power of social media, were debated.

We will be hosting more of these #EduTweet workshops in India through 2018. We look forward to developing more in-depth modules and add more schools -- and educators -- to the network! Follow #EduTweet to learn more.
