Twitter and the Bloomberg New Economy Forum

Monday, 12 November 2018

400 global leaders. Two days. One job: tackle the world’s most critical challenges.

Established by Michael R. Bloomberg, the #NewEconForum is a new community of global leaders addressing the emerging risks, opportunities, and challenges created by a world economy in transition, increasingly led by China and India. The inaugural forum was held in Singapore 6-7 November and, in the middle of this epic endeavour, was Twitter.

#NewEconForum is not just a showcase of big ideas in areas such as sustainability, AI and gender equality; it’s also a showcase of why Twitter is the perfect platform for driving exclusive thought leadership content and conversation.

As a Global Media Partner of the New Economy Forum, Twitter was proud to work hand-in-hand with Bloomberg to set a new standard for how ideas, audiences and brands can come together in powerful ways.

#GoLIVE

Bloomberg streamed 17 plenary sessions across the two days, driving more than 125k views. These ranged from the financial future facing millennials, featuring International Monetary Fund Chair Christine Lagarde, to how entrepreneurs succeed in the world’s biggest economies.

#Highlights

Of course, not everyone can dive into a whole speech or session, so by clipping key moments via Twitter Media Studio, highlights were posted across @NewEconForum, @business and @TicToc. These included quote cards, to video clips of video clips.

#NewEconForum highlights delivered more than 1 million video views on Bloomberg Twitter accounts. Reflecting the forum’s aim to also highlight the rising powers in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, the most retweeted Tweet was from Bloomberg Africa (@BBGAfrica), featuring Executive Chairman and Founder of the Econet Group Strive Masiyiwa (@StriveMasiyiwa) on the advantages of Africa’s young population.

Threads and Moments

When there are a lot of big ideas under discussion, you want to be able to curate them into powerful stories. Threads and Moments are a great way to do this. So, the Bloomberg team created threads to wrap up each day.

@TicToc used threads to curate several stories, such as the IMF Chief Christine Lagarde (@Lagarde) on the importance of education in the new economy.

#BlueRoom

The Blue Room has always been a place for the biggest celebrities and identities in the world to interact with their fans on Twitter. So, it only seemed fitting to host these biggest thinkers and leaders in a special Twitter + TicToc Blue Room at #NewEconForum. Hosted by @TicToc reporter Kurumi Mori (@rumireports), guests ranged from Australia ex-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (@MrKRudd) to Serpentine Gallery (@SerpentineUK) CEO Yana Peel (@yanapeel), and @GoJekTech founder Nadiem Makarim on leadership and learning.

Partnerships and Thought Leaderships

Partnerships are at the heart of how we work at Twitter: partnerships with publishers, leaders, and brands. The New Economy Forum is a prime example. We extended our already deep global partnership with Bloomberg, creating premium content to reach an engaged audience and drive valuable conversation. As Bloomberg CEO Justin B. Smith (@Justin_B_Smith) notes, Twitter is "the world’s biggest news platform" and together we are serving "a next generation of business people who get their news on Twitter."

Such quality content is also a perfect opportunity for brands that want to be associated with thought leadership initiatives. We were very pleased to have Singapore Tourism Board (@stb_sg) sponsor #NewEconForum highlights via @TicToc.

At Twitter, we believe public conversation is key to tackling the challenges and realising the opportunities ahead for humanity and the planet. They certainly won’t be solved without public conversation. The New Economy Forum is an important step to helping this happen. And Twitter is the place where those public conversations can — and do — happen at scale every day.
