Commemorating the March on Washington

Thursday, 29 August 2013

Fifty years ago, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial before hundreds of thousands of people to declare, “I have a dream.” Presidents, civil rights leaders and citizens joined together today to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.

Celebrations took place on the National Mall, across the country, and on Twitter and Vine as well, where people reflected on the message of social justice that still resonates, and pondered the social change that has taken place over 50 years. Many shared their thoughts throughout the day using such hashtags as #MLK, #MOW50, #IHaveADream, and others.

The 50th anniversary of the March on Washington was celebrated on the Mall, around the country, and on Twitter.

Rep. John Lewis (@RepJohnLewis) spoke at the March as a young organizer; he also spoke at today’s ceremony, using Twitter to share a moving reflection:

Following his address at the Lincoln Memorial, former President @BillClinton shared the moment, pictured alongside @BarackObama, @MichelleObama and former President Jimmy Carter:

People across the country marked the day with bell ringing on Vine:

An account created by National Public Radio (@NPR) called @todayin1963 revisits the summer of 1963 and tweets details of events as they happened during that summer long ago. Coupled with Vine videos shot at today’s commemoration, Twitter offers a rich view of the March and what has transpired in the 50 years since.

As this 50th anniversary draws to a close, @NBCNews has asked Americans to share their dreams for the future using #DreamDay. Others have come to Twitter to offer their favorite quotations by Dr. King. This visualization shows which remarks from throughout Dr. King’s life were most resonant today.
