#TwitterForGood Day around the world

Twitter has always sought to encourage a culture of volunteering and public service among its employees. The public nature of the platform, and the innumerable ways in which it’s harnessed for good, motivates employees to lend their talents to initiatives large and small across the world. Previously, this culture was celebrated on a biannual basis with #FridayForGood. Now, because of the perennial character of our volunteering culture, we’re calling these days of service #TwitterForGood Days. Just as before, our teams across the globe offer their time and skills to causes and campaigns in their local area. The customs and needs of the local community are foremost in our consideration as we endeavor to put down meaningful roots wherever we have an office. Read on to see some highlights from our recent series of #TwitterForGood Days.

AMERICAS:

Coding for Kids at Twitter NeighborNest (San Francisco)

The Twitter NeighborNest (@NeighborNest) is Twitter’s family-friendly technology learning center located right across the street from HQ. On #TwitterForGood Day, Tweeps taught children from Catholic Charities (@CatholicCSF) how to code in Scratch on a Raspberry Pi and using analog blocks, giving children a multidimensional overview of coding.

Networking and Coding Intro at Code Tenderloin (San Francisco)

Code Tenderloin (@codetenderloin) is a job readiness and workforce development program that helps Tenderloin residents cross Market Street and acquire positions in technology companies. On #TwitterForGood Day, Tweeps participated in a networking event with alumni of the program, many of whom are currently in entry-level jobs and searching for the next career step. The event was followed by an introductory workshop on coding and software skills to give participants a glimpse into what working as an engineer is like. Participants from Code Tenderloin then paired off with Tweeps for additional demonstrations of skills and networking. Everyone loved it so much that the event ran more than an hour over time!

Discussing Careers in Tech with Veterans (San Francisco)

Given that #TwitterForGood Day fell on Veterans Day this year, Tweeps on the University Recruiting (@TwitterU) team came together with veterans in the Bay to discuss careers in tech and at Twitter.

Building Solar Kits with Lighting for Literacy and Hands on Bay Area (San Francisco)

This #TwitterForGood Day, @TwitterSF partnered with Lighting for Literacy and Hands On Bay Area (@handsonbayarea) to put together solar kits that will help power the world. Tweeps were given all the tools and materials and guided through the process of putting the kits together. Things got a bit competitive, but all in the spirit of giving back and promoting environmentally sustainable energy solutions.

Supporting low income and homeless families (Boulder)

@TwitterBoulder celebrated 11/11 by assisting the Family Learning Center (@flcboulder), a resource for families of limited incomes and diverse cultures, to complete projects that they typically do not have the time or capacity for once the school year begins. Tweeps at the Boulder office also made 150 Meal Care Bags with @ThereWithCare for families experiencing medical crises, and joined the cooking crew at Bridge House (@bobridgehouse) to prepare a meals for homeless men and women in Boulder.

Building a Greener City (Washington DC)

@TwitterDC worked on a beautification project at a local high school’s garden in partnership with City Blossom, a nonprofit that integrates community-oriented gardening, education, youth entrepreneurship opportunities and interactive art to create green spaces throughout Washington DC.

Supporting American Youth (New York City)

Some @TwitterNYC Tweeps spent their afternoon with @StateBags, handing out backpacks with essential school supplies to children in Red Hook, Brooklyn. @StateBags is a Brooklyn-born one-for-one program that combats the challenging conditions of American children and encourages self-empowerment and community enrichment.

A Fun Afternoon with Senior Citizens (São Paulo)

Tweeps @TwitterBrasil hosted a series of projects, including visiting senior citizens at a nursing home called Residencial Israelita Albert Einstein. Tweeps played bingo, handed out donations and walked their new friends through the mechanics of Twitter.

APAC:

Unleashing Creativity with Children (India)

Tweeps from @TwitterIndia went to schools in Delhi and Mumbai where @FeedingIndia’s ‘Hunger Heroes’ routinely deliver food to children, guaranteeing them a hot and delicious meal for the day. Tweeps spent time with the children, decorating pots and planting saplings around the school, unleashing the creativity of both the children and tweeps! Tweeps also sponsored the meal of the day.

Revitalizing the Kumamoto Tourist Economy (Japan)

Since a massive earthquake hit the Kumamoto prefecture, the number of tourists in the area has decreased. This October, the Twitter Japan office celebrated #OctoberForGood and for three weeks Tweeps raised awareness of local small businesses in Kumamoto. Kumamoto is known as the secret fashion capital of Japan and efforts were made to help revitalize the local economy and sustain these small businesses. Tweeps also trained local businesses on how to use Twitter as a campaigning to raise their profile and secure sales.

EMEA:

Hands-On NGO Training (Dublin)

@TwitterDublin kicked off #TwitterForGood Day by hosting a group of NGOs and nonprofit organizations for a training session, where Tweeps covered best practices for campaigning on the platform, reviewed case studies exhibiting success, and then transitioned into a discussion on how the Twitter platform has been able to support and highlight the work of the organizations present.

Protecting the welfare of animals (Spain)

In Spain, animal welfare was the priority of our @TwitterSpain team. They partnered with @CiviClub and encouraged Spanish users to Tweet about #TwitterForGood and @CiviClub. The more Tweets they saw, the more fodder was donated to the Asociación Nacional Amigos de los Animales (@asociacion_anaa). By the end of the day, enough Tweets were sent for two tonnes of fodder.

*Editor's note: As of November 2017, Twitter has increased the character count of Tweets in certain languages to make it easier to share what’s happening.
